Announcements 2012

Jan and Feb and through Spring 2012

Volunteer opportunities through the Coastal Bend Audubon Society and through Coastal Bend Bays & Estuaries Program.
David Newstead, with Coastal Bend Bays & Estuaries Program and Project Leader, is currently involved in a project to better understand the movement patterns of Piping Plovers and Red Knots in the Coastal Bend area.
The project involves radio telemetry, and the need to capture birds for the study. David is looking for volunteers that may be able to help, preferably on an occasional basis, with these activities. The dates are now Jan/Feb 2012 and periodically through the spring after that.
In general, the work involves hauling trapping equipment from a boat or truck up to several hundred yards through water less than knee deep. Setting up equipment involves hammering posts and setting nets. Then we wait. . .. If successful, we safely remove trapped birds, take measurements, and affix a small radio transmitter to the bird. A trapping day often starts around daybreak, and usually lasts 6-8 hours, though this depends largely on tides and how birds are responding.
If you are interested in assisting with this project, please contact David with possible available dates. If you have any more specific questions about the work, please also feel free to contact David.
Contact David at 361.834.1484.
